Picnic by the pavilion, stroll by the lagoon and admire the native, rare and fine botanic specimens at Bendigo’s historic botanic garden. Established in 1857, the garden was one of the regional Victoria’s earliest botanic gardens and the first public garden in Bendigo.
Take the family and take in some of the gardens’ highlights:
Living Plant Collections
Peruse the labelled plant collections, maintained for conservation, research, education and ornamental display, including collections of herbaceous plants from the Whipstick–Kamarooka section of the Greater Bendigo National Park, cannas and lavender.
Lagoon
Stroll by the central lagoon lined with Australian indigenous streamside plants. A natural wetland, the lagoon is the only surviving section of the Bendigo Creek.
Arch of Triumph
Pay your respects at the Italianate Arch of Triumph, erected in 1925 as a memorial to the local servicemen who served in WWI.
Picnic Pavillion
Take your picnic basket to where many a happy sandwich-wielding visitor has gone before: the historic picnic pavillion, built in the early 1900s.
Walk through aviary
Find fine-feathered friends in the walk-though aviary, home to seed and fruit eating Australian parrots, including three ‘long-tailed’ parrot species (the Regent, Superb and Princess parrots).
Children’s play area
Let the kids get lost in their imaginations among the treasures in the Alice in Wonderland–themed play space.
