Twelve indoor courts, a 1500-seat show court, and a $47 million rebuild. That’s the short version of how Werribee’s old Rec Centre became Eagle Stadium. On 11 July, the venue marked its first decade with a free community open day.
For Wyndham families, it’s more than a stadium. It’s where kids play their first basketball game, parents sign up for group fitness, and school carnivals fill the courts on weekends. As one of the fastest-growing municipalities in Melbourne, Wyndham needed a facility that could keep up with demand. Eagle Stadium has more than done that.
“It’s been almost 10 years since we opened Eagle Stadium, as it is today, in June 2016,” a WynActive spokesperson said. “Since then, we’ve seen our community grow alongside it, from young athletes building confidence, to friends and families creating memories, and countless people reaching new heights in their health and wellbeing.”
The $47 million redevelopment, backed by Wyndham City Council and the Victorian Government, added the show court, a health club, crèche, and café, transforming the site into the largest indoor recreation complex in Melbourne’s west. It opened in stages, with full public access from June 2016.
The stadium team summed up the anniversary: “This milestone is really about celebrating the people who have helped make the stadium what it is today, the community that utilise it.”
Beyond the birthday buzz, Eagle Stadium runs programs year-round that can fly under the radar if you’re new to the area. Casual court hire means you can book a hoop for a family shoot-around on a rainy Saturday. There are all-abilities sessions, social pickleball and table tennis, and a crèche for parents who want to hit the gym or a group fitness class. The café does straightforward coffee and snacks, which is exactly what you need when the kids have been running for two hours.
If you have a child keen on basketball or netball, Wyndham Basketball and local clubs call the stadium home, with development programs, holiday clinics, and come-and-try days announced on the WynActive social media pages. Junior competitions and holiday programs fill fast; some age groups already have waitlists. The advice is simple: if you see a session, sign up quickly.
Don’t assume Eagle Stadium is only for rep sport. Casual shooting, adult social sports, and beginner programs are open to everyone. Kids as young as three can join pre-school activities in the multi-purpose rooms, and the stadium actively encourages all-abilities participation.
There’s no other indoor facility of this scale in Wyndham. Compared with smaller rec centres in Hoppers Crossing or Tarneit, the combination of 12 multipurpose courts, outdoor netball courts, and the show court makes this the go-to when regional tournaments, school sport days, or wet weather hit.
Getting there is straightforward. The address is 35 Ballan Road, Werribee. It’s a five-minute drive from Werribee train station, and local buses stop nearby. On-site parking is free and generous, a welcome change from inner-city sports venues. From the CBD, allow roughly 30 minutes by car on a clear run.
If you’re making a day of it, AquaPulse (also run by WynActive) is a few minutes away on Derrimut Road. The indoor aquatic centre has waterslides, a wave pool, and a gym, so families often split their weekend between the two. Werribee’s weekends are packed with markets and community events too. Check the council’s what’s on page before you head out.
Ten years in, Eagle Stadium still carries the faint scent of floor wax and vending-machine popcorn. The 1500-seat show court has hosted everything from state junior finals to school graduations. If the past decade is any guide, the next one will see even more western suburbs kids learning to dribble, shoot, and high-five under those high ceilings.
