A free AI training program backed by Deakin University is now open to Brimbank business owners, educators and students, with new cohorts starting on the 9th of every month. Registration closes on the 25th of the month prior and all enrolments go through the Deakin website, not Brimbank Council.
The SEED AI program, fully funded by Google.org and AVPN, gives participants foundational skills in prompt engineering, AI-driven productivity and operational strategy. No prior experience with artificial intelligence is required, and graduates earn an official certificate from Deakin University.
The training is part of a national push to build AI literacy across Australian communities. Brimbank is one of several Victorian councils promoting the program, alongside Monash and Geelong, creating a coordinated upskilling effort across the west.
Each monthly intake includes live virtual classes and mentorship components. The rolling structure means you can start learning within weeks rather than waiting for a traditional semester.
Council is promoting the program via its events website as of July 2026, but the enrolment process is handled entirely by Deakin. That’s a common point of confusion, with some residents trying to register through the council’s own platforms.
To secure a spot, you need to sign up before the 25th of the month for the following month’s cohort. Miss the deadline and you will wait another month. The next intake begins on 9 August, with registrations due by 25 July.
For Brimbank parents juggling work and family commitments, the free and flexible format removes two of the biggest barriers to professional development: cost and time. The skills are immediately applicable to small business operations, teaching or tertiary study.
You do not need to be a tech expert. The curriculum starts with the basics of using AI tools and moves into practical ways to improve productivity. The only requirement is a computer and an internet connection.
With the next cut-off just weeks away, the August cohort is expected to fill quickly. Registration is open now at deakinsmecentrelms.ai.
