Depart Melbourne on the M1 and exit the M1 just after Waurn Ponds taking the C134/Anglesea Rd which joins the B100/Great Ocean Rd travelling another 55 min until you reach Lorne. The final 55 min leg is spectacular. The entire journey time is around 2 hours with a distance of about 142 km.
Train and Bus from Melbourne to Lorne
You can take the train from Southern Cross Station to Geelong Station (1 h) and take the 101 Apolo Bay bus (Warrnambool to Melbourne via Apollo Bay & Geelong bus) from the station to Lorne (1 h 36 min). The total journey time comes to almost 3 hours with waiting time for the 101 bus. The train is $13.60 for adult and the bus $12.80.
The bus follows the B100/Great Ocean Rd so make sure to get a window seat on the left side and enjoy the spectacular views. Conveniently, the bus stops right at the Lorne Visitor Centre. It’s pretty easy, and enjoyable, to rent a bike in Lorne for the final leg to your accommodation.
